TWENTY-THREE VARIETIES AND COUNTING

Great wine must always taste true to the flavor of the winegrape from which it was made. We realize this importance, which has led us to plant certain varieties in specific regions where we know the winegrape will produce the finest quality.

AGLIANICO

Growing Location: Lodi Appellation
Viticulturist Note: New to us in 2014, our research shows the vine enjoys a dry climate with substantial sunshine. It tends to ripen late in Italy so we will keep a close eye on it during our harvest months.
Intrinsic Flavor: A full bodied wine with high acidity, firm tannins, and rich dark fruit flavors.

ALBARIÑO

Growing Location: Clarksburg Appellation
Viticulturist Note: Largely grown in Spain, this variety thrives in warm climates and has thick skins and small berries. Intrinsic Flavor: Typically citrus flavors, such as key lime, peach and apricot as well as mineral notes.

BARBERA

Growing Location: Clements Hills Sub-Appellation
Viticulturist Note: Vigorous and reliably productive in a wide variety of soils. The fruit is naturally high in acid, which it retains very well, even in hot climates.
Intrinsic Flavor: Black fruit flavors, from blackberry and black cherry to black raspberry and black plum.

CABERNET FRANC

Growing Location: Clarksburg Appellation
Viticulturist Note: Vigorous vines that produce small dark berries and usually ripen later in growing season.
Intrinsic Flavor: Light notes of pepper, raspberry and violet perfume.

CABERNET SAUVIGNON

Growing Location: Lodi Appellation, Clements Hills Sub-Appellation and Clarksburg Appellation
Viticulturist Note: Berries are small with tough skin making the winegrapes fairly resistant to disease and spoilage. It’s able to withstand some Autumn rains with little damage and is a mid to late season ripener.
Intrinsic Flavor: Vast ranges in quality and taste, but typical flavors can include blackberry, black currant, and black cherry, with an herbal note of bell pepper, asparagus and green olive.

CHARDONNAY

Growing Location: Lodi Appellation, Clements Hills Sub-Appellation and Clarksburg Appellation
Viticulturist Note: Vines are shy-bearing and produce relatively small, thin-skinned and fragile berries which require gentle handling during harvest.
Intrinsic Flavor: Very diverse profile from apple, pear, peach, and apricot flavors to pineapple, guava, mango and kiwi with a hint of lemon and tangerine.

GEWÜRZTRAMINER

Growing Location: Clarksburg Appellation
Viticulturist Note: Vines are susceptible to frost, disease and other challenges during season.
Intrinsic Flavor: Very aromatic with tones of passion fruit and roses.

MALBEC

Growing Location: Clements Hills Sub-Appellation
Viticulturist Note: Throughout the years, we have discovered the winegrape needs hang time on the vine in order to develop full maturity.
Intrinsic Flavor: Plum-like characteristics which can be linked to both Cabernet Sauvignon and Merlot.

MERLOT

Growing Location: Lodi Appellation, Clements Hills Sub-Appellation and Clarksburg Appellation
Viticulturist Note: Primary concern is the vine’s susceptibility to poor fruit set if exposed to frost, rain, or early heat waves in the Spring.
Intrinsic Flavor: Currant, black cherry and plum flavors which will hold a floral note of violet, caramel and clove spice.

MUSCAT CANELLI

Growing Location: Clarksburg Appellation
Viticulturist Note: Vine is not too vigorous, but that depends on soil types. It seems to prefer damp, deep soils. We are careful to check for diseases, as it is an easy target.
Intrinsic Flavor: Fruit notes of peach and orange with a touch of coriander.

NERO D’AVOLA

Growing Location: Lodi Appellation
Viticulturist Note: A new variety for us, we predict our warm days and cool nights will suit this Mediterranean-friendly vine well.
Intrinsic Flavor: Intense dark berry fruit with reasonable tannic structure.

PETIT VERDOT

Growing Location: Lodi Appellation and Clements Hills Sub-Appellation
Viticulturist Note: Likes hot sunny days and cool nights which maintains the acids and flavor of this thick-skinned winegrape.
Intrinsic Flavor: Similar to Syrah with black currant and blackberry fruit and spices of black pepper.

PETITE SIRAH

Growing Location: Lodi Appellation, Clements Hills Sub-Appellation and Clarksburg Appellation
Viticulturist Note: The vines are sturdy, fairly long-lived, and thrive in many types of soil. A fairly good producer with an average of four to eight tons per acre.
Intrinsic Flavor: Related to Syrah but massive and rich in chewy mocha-black fruit highlighted by fig and blueberry notes.

PINOT GRIGIO

Growing Location: Lodi Appellation and Clarksburg Appellation
Viticulturist Note: We are putting serious efforts into growing and producing Pinot Grigio.
Intrinsic Flavor: Depending on where it is grown, it can taste strikingly different. Lemon, apple and pear flavors are common and the resulting wine is crisp and fresh.

PINOT NOIR

Growing Location: Lodi Appellation and Clarksburg Appellation
Viticulturist Note: Generally a difficult winegrape to grow due to susceptibility to nearly all afflictions known to affect vines. We have to be careful because the Glassywinged Sharpshooter finds Pinot Noir a perfect host, carrying Pierce’s Disease, which can destroy an entire vineyard in as little as three years.
Intrinsic Flavor: Warm baked cherries, strawberries, and raspberries with violet and rose petal floral notes.

SANGIOVESE

Growing Location: Lodi Appellation
Viticulturist Note: Thriving in our hot and dry regions, these winegrapes are slow to mature and are known for late-ripening.
Intrinsic Flavor: Blueberry, strawberry, and plum flavors with cinnamon, clove and thyme spice.

SAUVIGNON BLANC

Growing Location: Lodi Appellation, Clements Hills Sub-Appellation and Clarksburg Appellation
Viticulturist Note: Vines tend to be vigorous, so we manage the canopy by careful pruning and by thinning leaves and shoots to direct the vine’s energy towards fruit ripening.
Intrinsic Flavor: Takes on an herbaceous profile of grass, weeds, lemon-grass with bell-pepper, asparagus, and a fruity taste of grapefruit, lime and melon.

SYRAH

Growing Location: Lodi Appellation
Viticulturist Note: Vines are not too vigorous and produce thick-skinned and dark berries. It requires heat to fully ripen, and like Merlot, is sensitive to poor fruit setting.
Intrinsic Flavor: It has a base of black currant and blackberry flavors boasting the spices of black pepper, licorice, clove, thyme, and bay leaf.

TANNAT

Growing Location: Lodi Appellation
Viticulturist Note: It seems to be a tough variety with tight berries.
Intrinsic Flavor: Dark fruit flavors of rich, ripe cranberries and blackberries with plum.

TEROLDEGO

Growing Location: Lodi Appellation
Viticulturist Note: Known to be easy to work with, this winegrape variety is new to our operation so it will be interesting to take notes on the growing cycle.
Intrinsic Flavor: Bearing a resemblance to Zinfandel, it has heavy black fruit flavors of dark cherries, blackberries, and ripe plums.

VERDELHO

Growing Location: Clements Hills Sub-Appellation
Viticulturist Note: New to us in 2014, we have read that the vine can be vigorous and tends to produce small bunches with a thick skinned berries.
Intrinsic Flavor: Aromatic with fruity character that ranges from ripe apricot and stone fruit to citrus and tropical fruits.

VIOGNIER

Growing Location: Lodi Appellation and Clarksburg Appellation
Viticulturist Note: It is a very shy producer and somewhat difficult to grow. It can be easily infected with powdery mildew in damp conditions.
Intrinsic Flavor: Tropical fruit flavors with orange blossom, violet, honey, and a touch of spice.

ZINFANDEL

Growing Location: Lodi Appellation and Clements Hills Sub-Appellation
Viticulturist Note: Enjoys hot and dry climates where water management is critical. When under stress due to lack of water, it can be prone to raisining.
Intrinsic Flavor: Full jammy fruit consisting of blackberry, raspberry, and black cherry flavors with a hint of black pepper spice.
