I think Rick honed in on exactly the wine style we aim to achieve: true to varietal.  A Pinot should have that Pinot nose, for example.  Those Pinot diehards know what I mean by that…

And after joining their members Tuesday night for a winemaker’s dinner, it’s enough to make you pick up stakes and move!

It was a marvelous evening coordinated by Bar Manager Jeffrey Cohen and executed with Chef Bryan Overdyke – their hospitality, service, staff, food pairing was working on all cyclinders; they never missed a beat.  The evening was truly magical in the Texas Hill Country.

Jeff and Bryan did their own research and created some spectacular pairings that were perfect matches to our wines.  The menu follows – but Bryan has promised at least one recipe for dessert that we’ll post later.

And when we thought we were done and the sun was setting in this 8,600 acre planned community Bryan pulls out an Espresso Pepper Chocolate Tort with Mixed Berry Coulis and paired it with our first vintage 07 Proprietary Cabernet Sauvignon.

He just simply has to share that recipe – five different peppers were in the mix and the pairing was award winning.

Their marketing brochure claims “there’s simply nothing else like it in the Texas Hill Country” … after such a great evening of food, wine and meeting so many nice folks, they may be exactly right. When the wine dinners move into the fifth hour, you know you’re having a good time!

Randy and I will definitely be up for a return trip to Cordillera – and if there were members of their club that couldn’t make the first dinner, well – I suspect the word is out that they won’t miss the second!

The Wine Harlots popped the cork on our new 2009 Muscat Canelli Frizzante and quickly added it to their Summer To-Drink List.

It features his parents’ maple syrup, Adirondack Gold Maple Syrup, and either our Midnight Reserve or Zinfandel. He says both wines work really well!

Ingredients

• 1 lb frozen strawberries
• 1/2 cup Midnight Reserve or Zin (you can decide what to do with the rest… )
• 2 tbls orange juice
• 1/2 cup Adirondack Gold Maple Syrup
• 1 tbls cornstarch
• 1 tbls cold water

Mix it Up

1. Mix the strawberries, wine, orange juice, and maple syrup in a saucepan and bring to boil.
2. Simmer for 15 minutes or until strawberries are thawed and mixture is bubbly.
3. Mix cornstarch and water and add to pan.
4. Boil 2-3 minutes and then cool mixture for 10 minutes.
5. Pour over vanilla ice cream and garnish with fresh mint sprigs.

This is the 26th year of the wine competition, which received over 3,000 entries for judging.  (The largest national wine competition outside of California!)

First, they made it clear this is one unique Pinot Noir:

This ain’t your daddy’s pinot noir.  And that’s a good thing.  For under a Jackson (a Hamilton plus a Lincoln, if you want to be precise) you can get a bottle of unpretentious deliciousness.

I love ‘deliciousness‘ as a wine descriptor – sounds like me at home describing the wine de jour!  But also, it illustrates that sometimes we don’t have to get super detailed with our wine jargon – if it’s good, it’s good!

Like most of our wines, our Pinot Noir is reasonably priced so it can be enjoyed (without pretentiousness) on a regular basis: $16.00 a bottle or $12.80 for Wine Clubbers.

Looks like we secured some great placements, and those that were interested in our Viognier, I shared the granitas recipe.  Seems to me that granitas = relief when you’re talking about the humid Houston summers!

Raced down to Hasta La Pasta in Katy, Texas – an hour west of downtown Houston for an evening of wine tasting and nibbling on their award winning dishes with a crowd of 40 folks.

Hasta La Pasta participated in the Best Bites Contest at the Houston Rodeo and was earned the Popular Choice award for their delicious chocolate bread pudding – we quickly matched it up with our Petite Sirah Petit Verdot and there wasn’t a crumb or drop left.   Restaurant Manager Kip was over the top with the welcome mat – and we found Randy signing the great poster.  Also made him sign bottle after bottle – he had an admiring crowd!

Heading home to try and catch up via the computer for work that we’ve neglected at home at the ranch.  There’s never enough hours in the day.  Back out on the streets of Houston tomorrow for more tastings and hopefully placements!

The restaurant was packed with Alebrijes loyalists, some who admitted that during a home renovation, they practically lived at the restaurant.  Talk about a good clientele!

We paired our wines with each course of Ruben’s menu, saving the last spot (a yummy creme brulee) for Grands Amis‘ Syrah port.

For a ‘school night’ 10:30pm was late to be wrapping up dinner!  Thanks for a great time.

Rich’s take on our 2008 Generation Pinot Noir:

The nose shows light cherry and raspberry with touches of cola, cinnamon and cardamom. The palate delivers on the promise of the nose in a simple light style,with a medium long finish. A good quaffer at a price rarely seen for California Pinot Noir. Keep an eye on wines coming from this region -

Randy’s thoughts:

They sorta have a signature taste that fits perfectly to my palate. All of the bottles from LangeTwins that I have tried so far, have been smooth with just the right amount of alcohol, fruit, and tannins. Enough to be bold without crossing the line of being obnoxiously out of balance. For their reasonable prices, I would say that LangeTwins makes some great wine!

But what separates our 2008 Generations Viognier from others, I think, is the aromatic nose that seems to jump out of the glass at you – Megan noticed it right away:

On the nose I found peach, pear, flowers, nectarines, white pepper, tinned pears, honeysuckle, and lemon.  This had a FABULOUS nose! I kept smelling and smelling and smelling and Matt kept draining his glass.

The 2009 California State Fair Wine Competition recently awarded our Sauvignon Blanc a Best in Class Award – an awesome recognition!

And now a nod to a “best of class” winner for sauvignon blanc. “Liquid Assets” tasted this zesty sauvignon blanc a few times earlier this year and has always been impressed with its refreshing lemon flavors and light mouth feel. Not bad for a winery in just its second vintage.

John’s take on our ‘purple teeth’ wine:

This was definitely a big wine but also definitely ready to drink now. The tannins were big and ripe but not too over the top “velcro” tannins as I like to say. Tons of rich, dark fruit with nice smokey and dried herb notes that round out the flavor/aroma profile nicely. At $20 it is a good value for a big fleshy, fruit filled wine when you are in that “New World” mood.

John nailed it.  This wine is made in a different style than our other wines – crafted to display intense color and fruit flavors, integrated tannins, and ready to drink now!  It is still (as of this writing…) my favorite wine in our lineup.

My only word of caution is to remember those purple teeth!

As soon as we tasted through a few wines, I knew they were going to be fans!  The 2007 Sauvignon Blanc and the 2007 Zinfandel were a couple favorites.  I can’t wait for them to try our 2008 Generations Viognier – to be released to our Wine Club Members in a few weeks.

Wine Harlots are total fangirls for this wine.  It’s a simply delicious elegant effort; there isn’t a false note about this wine.  This wine is happiness in a glass.

The depth of color is extraordinary.  It’s an enchanting plumy-magenta, the color is as deep a purple as it can be without crossing the threshold into black.  Great legs.  It’s a whole lot of fun to swirl in a glass; this juice is mesmerizing.  The LangeTwins promise purple teeth with this one, and boy, do they deliver.

The Viognier has a similar design to its Generations Tier sibling, the Petit Verdot Petite Sirah, only the picture is unique to the Viognier vineyard. We racked our brains thinking of something that reminds us of the vineyard and then it came to us… our vineyard has an owl nesting box on the edge of the property. When we are in the vineyard there is always a chance of catching the owl coming and going!

And we have also printed the label using 30% Post Consumer Recycled Paper. We talk about post consumer a ton around here, and it is simply paper stock that has a portion of consumer items that would otherwise have been disposed of as waste. These include office paper, cardboard, aluminum cans, plastics and metals.

With the label and wine complete and bottling scheduled in a few weeks (stay tuned for a few pictures!), we are excited to have our first ever Viognier in bottle ready to drink for the summer!

Randy Watson, aka The Wine Whore, recently tasted our 2007 Generations Petit Verdot Petite Sirah and obviously enjoyed it!

One of my favorite quotes from Randy’s wine review:

Like conjoined twins, two ‘purple teeth’ personalities emerge born from the conflicting characteristics of the Petit Verdot and Petite Sirah grapes. The Petit Verdot displays its gripping tannin and acidity while the soft and plush Petite Sirah pitches in a spicy yet plummy richness to the blend.

This wine, as I have said before, is a favorite of my wife, Amanda, and me.  It is so inky and lush!

We have a 2008 Generations Viognier releasing soon, would you like a taste Randy?

Thank you for taking the time to choose the label that you believe best fits LangeTwins!  With a total of 256 votes using Facebook and our blog, the winner is, with 46% of the votes, number three!

Coming in a close second with 37% of the votes is design number two, and capturing 17% is number one. We heard the good, bad, and ugly on each of the packages, including number three, which will only make the label that much better.

Many comments were simple like, “I’ll throw in my vote for number three. I’d say it is the most elegant of the three designs. I do like the way it ties in with your product line.” Others were direct to the design, “Based on the three designs, I like number three the best. However, it is still a bit dark. Perhaps a thin gold line in the middle of the dark edge will help it pop a bit. Or replace the dark edge with light straw colored edge.”

I touched base with Claudia Nagy and her design team and we added a simple border which does help combat the darkness. To further address the concern, when we go to print there are finishing options that we can use to brighten the overall feel of the label. For example, the native grasses in the background will be black with a gloss coating and high-build on a dark gray background. This contrast, along with the gold border, will create a rich label that won’t seem too dark. Many thanks to the team at Nagy Design!

Design 3 - With the Border

Another comment we heard a few times was the choice to use the word proprietary. It is important to us that each tier ties back to the family. For example, the Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Merlot, and Cabernet Sauvignon are in our “Family Core” Tier, and the Petit Verdot – Petite Sirah is in our “Generations” Tier. Proprietary fits.

When you think of proprietary you generally think of ownership, and the wines are estate grown. From vine to wine we are involved, we are the proprietors.  The definition also speaks to a specific product being marketed under the exclusive legal right of the maker. Wine Style
The wines will be limited individual lot wines crafted from grapes grown in our favorite vineyards. They are wines that excite us, have distinctive characteristics, and are single varietal. Don’t expect the wines to be made from the same vineyards each year, but expect the wines to be expressive and unlike any other wine!

Wine Distribution
You will be able to drink the wines in restaurants and also purchase in small wine shops – but the main focus will be in restaurants.

Wine Architecture
The Proprietary Tier is our highest quality wine available to purchase, unless you are a Wine Club Member, then one step above Proprietary is Single Barrel. When thinking of the architecture, think a triangle. At the base is Core, one level up is Generations, then Twins Icon, Proprietary, and at the tippy-top is Single Barrel. It all began with the Family Core label. The original label didn’t do the best job of portraying who we are: (1)A Family (2) Dedicated to Sustainable Winegrowing. With those two ideas, we worked with Nagy Design to create the new Family Core label.  In the process there was a slight change to the logo, and for consistency across all LangeTwins Tiers, we redesigned Single Barrel and Midnight Reserve.

And it’s not over! There is one important tier that we will begin designing in January. It’s for our Proprietary Tier, which will launch sometime next fall with a high-end Cabernet Sauvignon and Chardonnay. Take a look at our total brand architecture:

Seems confusing, doesn’t it? Why so many tiers and so many wines? So we can offer different wines to you that are unique both in the label design and also in the wine style. But for this design project, we are going to take the total brand architecture and break it down to something much smaller – only the wines that are “Available to Everyone!”:

The wines within these tiers are in the distribution network. They are the wines we focus on selling when we head out into the market to introduce LangeTwins to restaurants and fine wine shops!

Now that you have the basic background of where the Proprietary wines fit within the architecture, when we begin designing the Proprietary Tier we will want to make certain that it has the LangeTwins style that is portrayed in the Midnight Reserve and Family Core Tier. And this time it’s not going to be just family, we are counting on you to voice your opinion!

At the end of January we will have initial concepts of the new label and I look to you to get involved and vote for the one that you like the most! The label we choose will be on the bottle a ready for drinking in Fall of 2009!

The 2006 Single Barrel Petit Verdot is our most exclusive wine – only a few barrels were chosen for this hand-crafted wine and each bottle is individually identified on the label by its barrel and bottle number.  Every bottle in this small lot begs for a special occasion.

Our 2006 Single Barrel Petit Verdot comes from the River Ranch vineyard, where all of us Lange ‘kids’ grew up.  The use of extended maceration and barrel aging for 20 months in French and American oak barrels give this wine an intense flavor with robust tannins.  The concentrated flavors of blueberry, spice and vanilla will linger on your palate long after you finish your sip – exactly what you expect from a luxurious wine!

Wine Club Members’ first opportunity to purchase their allotment of this year’s Single Barrel Petit Verdot will be at the Wine Club Dinner this Saturday.  Limit three bottles per Wine Club Member.

In addition to the Single Barrel wine release, our 2007 Generations Petit Verdot/Petite Sirah Blend will also be making its debut at the Wine Club Dinner.

Our Generations Blend is 66% Petit Verdot and 34% Petite Sirah – two very ‘purple teeth’ varietals!  The wine is deep purple in color, with a full body and firm tannins.  Mocha-blackberry and blueberry notes are pronounced in this inky blend and the chocolate finish makes it a perfect match with dessert (think dark chocolate!)

Again, Wine Club Members will have the first opportunity to purchase this Winery Exclusive wine.  You won’t find it in stores – only at our winery and on our website!

The Last of Circles Edge wines - $30 per case!

The last of our Circles Edge wines are almost sold out.  As many of our loyal fans know, we started LangeTwins Winery with two brands – LangeTwins and Circles Edge.  The wines are distinctly different in wine style.

Circles Edge wines are made from 100% varietal grapes with no blending.  These wines are crafted to highlight the natural balance, flavors and textures unique to the individual grape varietals.

LangeTwins wines are fashioned in a traditionalist style.  Each of the varietals are harvested and crafted into wines independently in order to maintain the varietal and vineyard characteristics unique to each grape. They are then thoughtfully blended together and barrel-aged to yield a complex, finished wine rich with flavor yet still true to its varietal integrity.

A few months ago we made the decision to exclusively focus all of our attention on our namesake wines, LangeTwins.  As a result, we started selling Circles Edge for $30 per case – an incredible deal!  Everyone jumped at the offer.
